The Basics

iLok is a copy protection method used by many of our brands.

It has 3 types of activations, iLok USB, iLok Machine, and iLok Cloud.

Different brands/products will offer different iLok methods. iLok USB is always an option, but the availability of iLok Cloud and iLok Machine methods is at the discretion of the software developer.

iLok Account

For all iLok protected products, you will need an iLok account. You can create one for free here: ilok.com/#!registration

iLok License Manager

To manage your iLok licenses, there is a dedicated app called iLok License Manager. This app is used to register, activate, and move your licenses between locations.

iLok USB Key

iLok USB

This activation is stored on an iLok 2 or 3 USB key.

It is the best option for portability, if you frequently move between multiple machines, and offline use.

iLok Machine ID

Machine ID

This activation is stored locally on your computer.

While this is a convenient way to work offline, and does not require the additional cost of an iLok USB, there is the risk of a license being lost in the case of a drive failure.

This option also requires extra care when you upgrade to a new computer, the license(s) must be deactivated on your old machine first to ensure you do not lose them.

iLok Cloud

iLok Cloud

This activation is based online, and requires a "cloud session" using the iLok License Manager.

It requires an active internet connection for the entire time you use the plugin(s).

Vienna Smart Hits is a breathtaking exploration into the organic, yet surreal and swirling amalgamation of hits, "braams", risers, swells and sub-booms.

Following their successful Vienna Smart Spheres, Vienna's sound designers and editing engineers again dug deep into VSL's multi-million sample database of released and unreleased treasures to unearth extraordinary marvels that were then bent, boosted, mangled, distorted, twisted, and re-invented.

Who would have thought that a roaring subcontra Bb of the contrabassoon would be the ideal raw material for organic sub-booms?

That the extra-thin ponticello tremolos performed by an ensemble of violas could be the basis of mysterious entropic explorations?

Merged with thrilling sounds from an array of diverse synthesizers, the Vienna team created extensive material for this impactful collection.

Sources of sounds used in Vienna Smart Hits include the bass drum from Synchron Percussion I for low end hits, reverse cymbals for swells, the Yamaha CFX for shimmering transients, solo violin glissandos for risers, brass run-ups for short risers, sforzato and sustained sounds from Vienna Dimension Brass for "braams" as well as reversed sounds for swells, a heavily distorted Vienna Konzerthaus Organ for braams, and Taiko drums for sub-boom rumble.

In addition to the organic component created with symphonic sounds, various electronic sound sources, including wavetable and FM synthesizers, were used to create additional layers, using their extensive routing and envelope modulation capabilities.

The synth sounds were further treated with voicing and detune functions to adapt them spatially to the original sample recordings.

On top of this, all the sounds were tweaked and shaped using a wide variety of manipulation techniques, with a finishing mastering touch before being included in the Vienna Smart Hits collection.
