The Basics

iLok is a copy protection method used by many of our brands.

It has 3 types of activations, iLok USB, iLok Machine, and iLok Cloud.

Different brands/products will offer different iLok methods. iLok USB is always an option, but the availability of iLok Cloud and iLok Machine methods is at the discretion of the software developer.

iLok Account

For all iLok protected products, you will need an iLok account. You can create one for free here: ilok.com/#!registration

iLok License Manager

To manage your iLok licenses, there is a dedicated app called iLok License Manager. This app is used to register, activate, and move your licenses between locations.

iLok USB Key

iLok USB

This activation is stored on an iLok 2 or 3 USB key.

It is the best option for portability, if you frequently move between multiple machines, and offline use.

iLok Machine ID

Machine ID

This activation is stored locally on your computer.

While this is a convenient way to work offline, and does not require the additional cost of an iLok USB, there is the risk of a license being lost in the case of a drive failure.

This option also requires extra care when you upgrade to a new computer, the license(s) must be deactivated on your old machine first to ensure you do not lose them.

iLok Cloud

iLok Cloud

This activation is based online, and requires a "cloud session" using the iLok License Manager.

It requires an active internet connection for the entire time you use the plugin(s).

Under The Hood

SMASH uses a series of compressors and saturators all calibrated to the one main control.

The harder you drive the control the more of each stage you will hear.

Controls

  • Power - turn the plugin on/off
  • Mix - Wet/Dry control for parallel processing directly on your audio tracks
  • Smash - Control the plugin's custom-designed saturation and compression algorithm
  • Lofi - A classic lo-fi filter effect with 12dB per octave slopes at 550Hz to 7kHz, great for mixing in parallel to add extra spice and grit to your tracks
  • Hi-Cut - A high-shelf filter so you can cut unwanted harshness

Features

  • Custom Designed - Inspired by analog amplifier circuits of old, fusing a sweet blend of saturation and compression for your tracks.
  • Presets - Over 40 mix ready presets are available to get you started.
  • Great for mixing in parallel to add extra spice and grit to instruments.
  • Input: Controls the input level to the plugin (-18 to +18dB).
  • Output: Controls the output level post-processing (-18 to +18dB).
  • Mix: Wet/Dry control for parallel processing and use directly on your audio tracks (0 to 100%).
  • SMASH: Controls how much the custom-designed saturation and compression algorithm is added to your sound (0 to 10).
  • Lo-Fi: A classic Lo-Fi filter effect with 12dB per octave slopes at 550Hz to 7kHz.
  • Hi-Cut: A high-shelf filter that attenuates higher frequencies (0dB to -12dB).
  • A/B: Allows the quick audition of two settings for comparison.
  • Setting A can be copied to B and vice versa with the arrow button.
  • KIT Logo: Opens the KIT Plugins website.
  • The ? Button: Opens the manual in your default PDF viewer.
